that's three halves darling. yeah, I guessed you would be conflicted, as near and dear to your heart the dark parts of this show and character are. I'm taking the point of appreciating the Time War arc for what it was, and everything it did for the character (and the memories remain it's still a big fucking deal in the Doctor's head - once he saved and once he destroyed), but I think the show needed to move on and this is a good way to do it.

okayophelia:

yeah i agree - the time war was become this big bloated ugly simmering muck at the heart of the doctor, infecting everything to the point where all the stories skewed to it, became about the doctor’s darkness.

and i do love the doctor’s darkness, narratively, viscerally. but here’s the thing. it’s still there. all those times the doctor bombed a building and gleefully told rose to run, those times he chained immortals to their own personal hells, those times he fought and fought until the name doctor became feared. that’s all still in him, that capacity.

and that was part of the problem; the show didn’t want to explore that too fully. it wanted to have that alluring narrative darkness but keep the doctor being the doctor; the delightful wonderful ultimately humanist doctor.

and with gallifrey burning in his heart? how do you ever come back from that? the story went that he erased the war doctor from himself because he couldn’t go on being the doctor with that inside him. but something like that; genocide, planets, children, entire species burning. that never gets erased. the doctor was never the doctor, not to himself, not with that in his past. and that’s why it was skewing all the stories. that’s why i was getting so fed up with it

because as much as i enjoy the darkness, the show could never acknowledge that properly. it would destroy the narrative. so that own personal fiction of the doctor - that the war doctor was not him - was skewing him on a personal level, but also the show. because the show loved that darkness too, but could never fully commit to it. it can do the trickster darkness, that capricious judgment, that capacity to be terrible and wonderful, but it could not commit eternally and wholly to the kind of true despair/evil that was the act of finishing the Time War existing inside him. that would be like erasing the doctor himself.

this resolution? this resounding, rebounding sleight of hand? i adored it in a lot of ways. it was humanist, hopeful, full of grace and sound and fury - defiance unto the end against the horrors of the world and the cruelties, the uplifting of the spirit of togetherness and ingenuity and belief in the living; which is what the doctor has always been intended to stand for.

i did not adore the execution - i wanted clara in that painting going out of her mind with the horror standing there in the painting seeing the war in the flesh, i wanted the time war to actually be the goddamn time war, with fighting on all fronts, on all planets, through all time; even if that was just montages or through strategy talk of that general, i wanted some goddamn acknowledgement that this was not just war; this was a war that swallowed the universe until the universe was war itself

which would have been particularly poignant because the doctor has narratively always been the embodiment of the universe; swirling mysterious capricious wonderful trickster eternal creature - the representation of all the unknown and wonder of the universe to his companions and to us, he is the universe.

and he became war when the time war turned the universe to war - which i feel there was not enough of. we didn’t see the war doctor be the warrior, beyond a couple of lazy scenes of people screaming amid laser light shows, we didn’t see the horror - not in him, in his experience and his actions amid that war - we didn’t feel his despair, we were told not shown.

but going back to the embodiment notion - if he became war during the Time War, which swallowed the universe - when he remembered himself, with the help and love of humanity in the form of clara, and his own self? the universe was saved.

not to mention the fact that the Moment was itself a creation of war, designed to destroy the universe, grew a conscience and engineered an entire situation in which she would not have to destroy that universe; taking the form of the Bad Wolf - who destroyed the daleks and finished the time war out of all consuming love way back in s1 - to do it.

so many wonderful narrative threads coming together, so much time that could have been spent on this poetic, stark story wasted on elizabethan theatrics, but I guess that’s Who, and that always has been.

#can we talk about #how much amy #probably reminds the doctor of donna #like #not even the whole ‘oh they’re both ginger sense’ i mean#just #wow #and so when amy says she wants to go home #like donna did that one time #the doctor’s like #well #damn #not again #and even when she says not like that #the look on his face #it kills me #because he knows that he SHOULD take her home like that #he knows what will happen to her in the end if he doesn’t#but he keeps her with him #and he hates himself for it (via freyjas)

Just won this guy!
His special ability amuses me to no end. And now I have played all the main story levels, so it’s time to go back for more characters and train everybody up.

I’ve Forgotten Why I Shouldn’t Blink by ^alicexz

what are we talking about? ;)

The Doctor Who fandom is going Sherlock.

And its shadow is made up of Vashta Nerada.

Because this wasn’t bad enough Emmett?

And it speaks only one phrase:
“Are you my mummy?”

Which means that it could only say that when you weren’t looking at it. As soon as you look at it it’s stone, so when you look away from the thing that scared you so much you forgot about it. Which means it gets to decide whether or not to just kill you unknowingly or mess with you mentally again first for fun.
Dear god, what have we done?

We’re becoming Moffat.

We’re becoming Moffat.

Yes, that’s what I said.

You hear the voice of a child behind you, lost and afraid.
“Are you my Mummy?”
Turning to look, you see a statue, out of place here. You don’t remember there being a statue here. It appears to be a traditional angel, more at home in a cemetery, but there’s something wrong with it.
The face is warped, stretched, completely disfigured. It’s the face that should appear in your nightmares, a nameless fear that waits in the dark.
Shaking off the feeling of dread that has settled in your bones, you look about for the child you heard. There’s nobody there except you. Nothing there but an out of place statue of an angel that’s wrong.
You turn away. Why do you feel so unsettled?
You hear the voice of a child behind you, lost and afraid.
“Are you my Mummy?”
Turning to look, you see a statue, out of place here. You don’t remember standing so close to a statue. It appears to be a traditional angel, more at home in a cemetery, but there’s something wrong with it.
The face is warped, stretched, completely disfigured. It’s the face that should appear in your nightmares, a nameless fear that waits in the dark. The statue’s arms are raised, hands reaching forward. Almost as if it’s trying to grab your shoulders.

Then you look down and notice you have two shadows.  Now its a race to see which kills you first.

FUCKING SHIT. It is 11:11 pm and fuck me.
